PRR Rosslyn Connecting Fantrip Derailment
Thanks to Mr. Dean we have the following information from the NRHS archives about this trip and the photos associated with it taken by John seen in this collection. He was one of the 95% who walked own to the derailment site and boarded that day: The following is from the Baltimore Chapter newsletter of May 2, 1955: "The Washington Chapter operated a fantrip to Popes Creek, Md., from Rosslyn, Va., via the Pennsy, Sunday , April 17, 1955, and as usual, one never knows what to expect on a fantrip. Anyhow, approximately one-half mile from the Rosslyn station, someone placed a tin can in a switch, resulting in the two road switchers, as well as the first car of the 10-car train being derailed. This occurred a little more than an hour before the starting time of the trip. 95% of the fans walked to the scene of the wreck and boarded the train there but an A. B. & W. bus was chartered to take the other passengers to the train. A switcher was placed on the train and it left 40 minutes late, minus the derailed car and diesels. Two road diesel units were placed on the train at Bowie for the trip down the Popes Creek Branch. The best thing about Popes Creek are their crab cakes. On the return trip, the switcher met the train at Bowie and pulled the train into the Washington Union Station. Chartered busses carried the passengers from that point to Rosslyn. There were approximately 450 passengers aboard including Chapter members . . . and the writer. The Washington Post and Times Herald had a front page article on the trip." From the trip announcement in the April 4 newsletter: " . . . leaving Rosslyn, 8.00 A. M., and arriving at Popes Creek, 11.50 A. M. Train will leave Popes Creek, 1.00 P. M, for the return trip, arriving in Rosslyn, 4.30 P. M. Picture stops will be made at Bowie, LaPlata and Brandywine. Round-trip fare will be only $3.00." Never throw anything away. Les Dean
