We're looking back at Virginia Interlocking, where the line to Union Station diverges, passing over the bridge dimly visible in the middle-right of the image. Beyond the home signals you see the two tracks diverging to Union Station bending off to the right. The cars to the left are at Jersey Yard. Following L'Enfant's plan, Virginia Avenue is one of the radial boulevards, named for the states, that pass through prominent locations, in this case, the Washington Monument. Because the railroad ROW follows the alignment of Virginia Ave., the Monument can be seen through the wires, fitting the pattern of the "states" avenues. |
