On The Eve Of Conrail
I had to go to a funeral for a cousin in Washington, DC, during the last week of March 1976. Knowing that the startup of Conrail was just about to occur on April 1st, I went to my former home in NJ and decided to pursue my very last opportunity to photograph both the Erie Lackawanna and the Lehigh Valley. To do this, I had to buy some Kodachrome 25 film and borrow a camera from a friend, John Briggs, who lived in N.J. Then I needed to borrow the 1968 Chevy Impala owned by my brother Bill. Early on the 31st of March, I drove to the Delaware Water Gap and photographed E-L action. Then I followed the former Erie main line westward, encountering E-L freight action. Finally, I arrived at Sayre, PA, the heart of the LV. I spent the rest of the the day until sunset, photographing to the contentment of my heart, the last day of life for the LV! It was a magical moment!
