The Last of Street Running in East Chicago
As a part of their extensive railfan trip in Columbus, Oh., Chicago, IL., and Detroit, MI., of August 1956, John and friend Bill Rosenberg took a timeout for Chicago South Shore action in East Chicago, Indiana. Why East Chicago, Indiana? There was one-month left before this section of the South Shore would be re-aligned along the new Indiana Toll Road, and that would spell the end of street running here, leaving South Bend and Michigan City as the only sections of street running left on the CSS. Today, only Michigan City sees street running, and plans have that ending in the next decade. John and Bill photographed several trains in the old alignment along Chicago Ave. one month before street running here ended.
