Magnificent picture! Man, what great childhood memories this classic view brings back! This photo was taken at the old Hudson Terminal in Lower Manhattan (built by the H&M in 1909); in 1971, this historic complex was closed when the new WTC Terminal (destroyed on 9/11) opened, and demolished shortly thereafter.
Nothing remains today of this magnificent, echoing cathedral of commerce; I am most fortunate to own a wooden, early PATH-era "Hudson Terminal" platform sign, purchased many years ago at one of the old Hoboken Terminal festivals.
This awe-inspiring shot reminds us of a long-lost era, when rail facilities, even those for rapid transit, were often magnificent structures of dignity and beauty. |
