The Old Journal Square "Tube" station was a station that I knew on an intimate basis growing up; my mother and I passed through here frequently through the 1960's, before we boarded "the tubes" to Manhattan or Newark. The "Glove Shop" also had an entrance in the now long-gone Public Service bus concourse, adjacent to the H&M/PATH station. Mom often shopped here, while I looked out of the windows to watch the trains (I never cared how long she shopped!) There were also display windows for the "Glove Shop" that faced the escalators coming down to the main concourse. Another (wooden) escalator also came down from the PS bus concourse itself. This ancient station was originally known as "Summit Ave", in the pre-Journal Square days. At the far western end of this station, there was a stairway that led to an open passageway, That took passengers up to street level, adjacent to the old J.M. Field's department store. You could look down from the passageway and see the tops of the trains...quite exciting for a young boy who was really into trains! Today, this long-forgotten passageway would have become a mugger's paradise. The old snack bar, seen at left, served great pancakes, not to mention super hot dogs! Boy, the trainload of memories this scene brings back.....sadly....the memories are all that remains.....
