As a side note on CNJ 561; it is the former NYS&W M-4 that was bought in the late 50's. |

The train in this photo is a Newark (Broad St.)-Elizabethport CJ shuttle. After leaving the Jersey Central's Broad St. station, the shuttles would pass "CY" tower, and cross the Pennsy's Greenville Branch. The New Jersey turnpike passes overhead, and, in the background, is the bridge carrying the tracks of the Lehigh Valley. Though Budd cars operated on the aforementioned shuttles, loco-hauled consists also operated to and from Broad St. during the rush hours, until April of 1967. One such train operated between Broad St. and Atlantic Highlands, via the old Atlantic Highlands Branch. After passenger service on the Atlantic Highlands Branch ended in late 1966, these trains were cut back to Matawan. When the Aldene Plan went into effect in April of 1967, all passenger service on the Newark Branch was abandoned, and the Newark-Matawan trains were terminated. |
