The magnificent "Erie" nose wings seen displayed here were still commonplace on ex-Erie power well into the 1960's, the early years of the E-L merger. Note the Stillwell coaches on the left with light roofs; these were Susquehanna cars (recall the Erie once controlled the NYS&W); later in the 50's, they were replaced with new Budd equipment. These, in turn, were sold and replaced with second-hand standard coaches from the B&A. These cars served Susquehanna commuters until all passenger service was abandoned in 1966. By the mid 60's, the ex-Erie PA's were repainted into the former DL&W passenger colors, with E-L heralds. These handsome units were commonplace of both commuter and through trains, well into the 1960's. Note the Erie water tank in the background; long a local landmark, it stood until the 1980's, when the former terminal area was converted into a new mixed commercial-residential area, "Newport". Nothing seen here remains today; all trace of railroad use has long since been replaced by new towers, a shopping mall, and new roads. what is seen in this classic photo is a but a mere glimpse into a lost empire...... |
