In the Summer Of Love, this Rock Island freight trundles westbound down 5th St. in Davenport. It has just crossed the Mississippi and will soon diverge onto the Council Bluffs main at Missouri Division Jct. |

@webmaster...... I grew up in a little pink house, in John Mellencamp's home state too boot with "Little Pink Houses" being my favorite song. |

A classic. I love street running like this, and those houses are delightful! You wonder about all the human dramas inside--and aboard the passing trains. |

Notice on the right the building with the tower, that was and still is the Scott Co. Jail in downtown Davenport. The signal in front is an eastbound distant signal for the Mississippi River bridge, also known as "Government Bridge", into Rock Island, IL. Today this scene looks remarkably similar, the railroad is today the Iowa Interstate and is single-tracked. The autos aren't the same, of course, but the brick street still runs along the track in a near street-running mode, Many of the old houses remain. I like to call this shot "little pink houses", like John Mellencamp sang about. |
