Thanks Blair, yes google streetview is amazing. We count on our subscribers to help us ID dates and locations as John shot much film that was processed later in large batches, then stored, not labeled. |

re: 759 trip, 11-3-1968, up N&W from Roanoke.
Those pictures have been bugging me ever since i first saw them. I was on that trip. I can't tell you how much time I spent on google maps trying to find that location. On our old computers, we didn't have the ability to use google street map. On the new computers, we do.
I was looking at my DeLorme Road Atlas of Virginia last week, checking out the N&W running north from Roanoke. When i got to Cloverdale, it all clicked. if you go to google street maps, head for Cloverdale, VA, and put the little man down in Sanderson drive, also known as State Route 605. Coverage is incomplete, but there's an intersection near a mini-storage facility, and you're up around 8458 to 8490 Sanderson drive. Turn the little man until he's looking northwest. Bingo. The ridgeline is unmistakeable. Cloverdale is now overrun with McMansions, and there are radio antennas on top of the mountain, but this is the place.
Berrytown is tempting, because of Massanutten mountain in the background, but this is in Cloverdale. There are several pictures in a series taken there.
I am glad i finally found it. best wishes. |
