ps's 2700 series compromise-roof cars were built between 1917 and 1918; some of the series were built in ps's own plank road shops, while the rest were built by cincinatti. Up until the early 1940's, PS streetcars were scrapped at PS's Passaic Wharf, a grim, forbidding place known to the streetcar buffs of that era as the "streetcar slaughterhouse". Hundreds of cars were scrapped here, especially during the later 1930's, when many PS car lines were being converted over to motor buses or all service vehicles (these were dual-powered trolley buses; these unique vehicles ran until PS pulled the plug on ASY operations in 1947)) This car is seen at the Federal Scrapyard, which scrapped the remaining PS streetcars in the mid-50's, as Passaic Wharf had since been closed. This car is still signed for the #29, which was the last of the subway-surface lines which used the Newark City Subway to travel downtown. The line ran between Newark and Caldwell; cars were stored and serviced at the Bell St. barns in Montclair, until 1952, when the line was converted to diesel buses. This was the very last of the connecting surface lines that used the subway to connect to downtown Newark. Note how the car is being scrapped with virtually all hardware intact; seeing this, it is no wonder why any sort of hardware/memorabilia from the once-vast PS streetcar fleet is scarcer than the proverbial hen's tooth today. The very last of the old PS cars ran until early 1954, when they were replaced by the 30 ex-TCRT PCC's, which faithfully served the NCS until replaced by new LRV's in 2001. It's truly sad that this fine old car could not have been saved for preservation.
