Wow, not only wooden coaches behind steam, but wooden coaches with windowed vestibules! They were outlawed here in New Jersey in 1947-48! Thanks for sharing these photos!

This might be an excursion train, judging by the length, numerous open windows, and the baggage car. It's a morning shot and if it's July 4, 1954, that was a Sunday. But, no white "extra" flags, so scrap that idea! In any case G3 pacific 2396 has just made the long climb uphill from Windsor Station, 2 miles behind. Weekday afternoons there was the Montreal West shuttle that only went the further four miles and still had wooden coaches with wicker seats. A lot faster than the long ride on the #3 streetcar that could be sneakily short-turned long before it got to Montreal West.

Gosh--wooden cars in 1954?? Leapin' lizards, they surely were traditionalists up there! Wonder if these weren't specials of some kind, not regular intercity runs. Thanks for sharing these priceless images.
