On her way back to Hoboken on a dreary day, the "Lackawanna" will soon be crowded with another heavy load of well-dressed commuters bound for their Manhattan offices. After her 1949 dieselization, the "Lackawanna" was the most distinctive in the fleet, both in appearance and sound. As a diesel, she was the only boat in the fleet to sport a short stack; her new diesel engines gave off an eerie, high-pitched whine which earned her the nickname of "whining willy". Also, as a diesel, she was the only boat to have a horn, instead of the steam whistles used on the other ferries. Today, like 1967 itself, this once-proud ferryboat is now only a memory. |
