Barclay Street ferry terminal.

During the morning and afternoon rush hours, the lofty old Barclay Street Terminal was a hubub of well-dressed commuters. In between rush periods, the ancient structure lapsed into a sleepy, almost tranquil state, that would last until the next rush hour.

The vintage advertising posters, station signage, and classic autos wonderfully date this long-ago scene, which, even then, was living on borrowed time.

On weekends and holidays, when the ferries were not running to Hoboken, the decrepit Barclay St. terminal was populated only by pigeons, gulls, and parked autos.

Such a quiet scene was light-years removed from the busy morning and evening rush hours, when crowds of well-dressed commuters thronged the echoing old structure.

Today, nothing seen here is in existence, totally obliterated by the landfill dumped here during the construction of the World Trade Center, where Battery Park City would one day rise.

The classic autos seen here would make for a fine vintage car show. Nothing is forever. Nothing remains the same.
