Commuters cross the street to their offices. The E-L Terminal was located at Barclay and West Streets, and most who used this facility worked within walking distance.

A deleted scene from a "Mad Men" episode? No, just a typical 1960's rush-hour scene at the E-L's antiquated Barclay St. Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan. These well-dressed commuters (note how many of the men were still wearing hats, and that the ladies are wearing heels and carrying pocketbooks) had debarked earlier from their ancient commuter trains at Hoboken and opted for a brief, but invigorating, voyage across the Hudson, instead of boarding one of the crowded PATH tube trains.

Not long after this timeless image was captured forever on film, the E-L ferries would be shut down forever, and the lofty Barclay St. Terminal would sit empty, deserted, and forlorn. (It was) an echoing, decaying mausoleum to a past way of life, as it silently awaited its eventual demolition.
