This timeless image was taken on the upper deck of either the "Elmira" or the "Lackawanna", the very last of the E-L ferry fleet in operation, just before all ferry service to Barclay St. from Hoboken was abandoned. Note the commuters wearing hats, this was still very much the "mad men" era, when New York commuters still dressed for work. The open promenades of the upper deck of the ferries enabled energetic commuters to literally "walk to work", by making several complete circuits around the upper deck, in between terminals. Of course, you couldn't do that on the PATH tubes! A long-established way of commuting was about to disappear into the yellowing pages of history. |
