A view of the ferry terminal from the Hudson River enroute to Barclay Street Terminal in Manhattan, NY.

How well I recall this timeless scene as a young lad, back in the 60's! Either the "Lackawanna" or the "Elmira" has just departed the still-palatial 1907 Hoboken terminal, bound for Barclay St. Three slips at Hoboken are empty, telling us that the two remaining boats are out on river.

One slip would have been, a few years earlier, occupied by an ex-Erie boat, the "Maplewood" (a.k.a. "Meadville") as she was more expensive to operate than the ex-DL&W boats, she was only used during the rush hours.

She was retired in 1965 and later towed to a marine yard in Jersey City, not far from the old CNJ ferry terminal.

On the extreme left, the low, dark-green building (which housed E-L offices) was where the E-L tugs would dock. This structure, vacant for many years following the end of ferry service, was later demolished entirely, leaving only the rotting, decaying pier on which it once stood.

Happily, this magnificent terminal has since been restored, and the long-dark "Erie Lackawanna" sign once again blazes forth with light at night.
