Besides the Scranton we see two other EL ferries in the slips. Most of the boats were nearing the end of their service lives and would require extensive repair to continue in service. |

If it were not for the mangled, twisted outer end of one of the upper deck loading ramps, one could easily think that this timeless photo was taken several years earlier, during an off-peak hour. All of the ferries seen here were ex-DL&W; the "Maplewood" (an ex-Erie boat) had already been towed away, and sat idle and decaying for years in the old Morris Canal basin, not far from the old CNJ ferry terminal at Jersey City. She had been retired in 1965, only being used during the rush hours; she was more expensive to operate than the older ex-DL&W ferries. Until several years ago, the "Binghamton" had been a popular floating restaurant in Edgewater, NJ, several miles up the Hudson from Hoboken. Sadly, she was closed some years back, and gradually sank into the river, dececaying rapidly. What was left of the historic vessel was further ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. the "binghamton" was not only the last dl&w ferry in existence; she was the very last of all the hudson river ferries once operated by the railroads, since the former cnj ferry "elizabeth" was scuttled nearly a decade earlier. the sands of time slips by far too fast....... |
