With only two boats in operation during the final weeks of E-L ferry service, these three ferries, the "Binghamton", "Pocono", and "Scranton" sat idle with cold boilers at the Hoboken terminal. It would seem probable that one of these oos boats could be pressed into service as a spare, had either the "Elmira" or the "Lackawanna" suffered mechanical problems that would have caused one of them to be taken out of service.

Being operated with only two ferries, the Barclay Street line's schedules were drastically cut back, with a number of sailings eliminated. A new PATH entrance was then ready to open adjacent to track #1 at Hoboken, to accommodate the additional riders that would be gained once the ferries shut down forever.

The previous year, 1966, saw the abandonment of not only several E-L trough trains, but also, a number of commuter services on several lines. The years between 1966 and 1970 indeed marked the melancholy twilight of long-haul passenger service out of Hoboken.

So much was poised for extinction when this photo was taken in 1967.
