The few trailers seen parked here are proof that mail traffic on the E-L is on the decline; only several years earlier, the loading bays here at Hoboken would be jammed with trailers and trucks.

As the 60's neared its end, virtually all mail traffic on the E-L had been eliminated, as had most of the long-haul through trains. Likewise, by the late 1960's, express business was about to expire; no longer would express cars be seen in the consists of E-L through trains.

When this photo was snapped, most through service on the E-L had already been eliminated, and the ferries were poised to make their final runs across the Hudson to Barclay St. Indeed, a colorful era in railroading era was on its way into oblivion.
