With the end of the season, the New Haven was ending passenger service to Woods Hole. The depot will be closed in a couple weeks from this view.

You can see the top of steamer Nobska's stack over the top of the Steamship Authority building. Woods Hole was an important rail/ship hub for many years. The New Haven RR always advertised fares through to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard and often offered special excursion fares between rail points and the islands. As late as 1958 4 daily trains ran from Boston and one from NY plus extra weekend only service, even sleepers from NYC to Woods Hole. Due to a funding dispute, there was no service in 1959 after June 30, but service from New York resumed for the 1960-1964 summers and in 1961 there was also service from Boston via Stoughton (a roundabout route due to the loss of the Neponset River bridge).
