A commuter train rolls by with former ERIE engine #953, from a group of RS-2's delivered in 1949.

At a quick glance, one might think that this photo was taken back in the 1950's, when Erie commuter trains were still terminating at Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City.

But, a closer look will reveal an E-L diamond on #953's grimy flanks, telling us that this is the 1960's, and the Erie and the DL&W are now one road, roads that merged in 1960, and that now the trains serve Hoboken, instead of Jersey City.

The antique Stillwells further date this timeless, classic image of 'old school" new jersey railroading.
