A true "career girl" of the 60's, the "Phoebe Snow" never shirked her duties, even if it meant hauling a rag-tag conglomeration of workaday head end cars in her otherwise sleek consist. REA Express cars, baggage cars, and RPO's indeed made for interesting consists, not just on the "Phoebe", but also on the other through trains then in operation on the E-L.

1966 was a particularly sad year for railfans; not only did the E-L abandon commuter service on several lines, but also, several through trains were also axed, including the "Phoebe Snow" and trains nos. 21 and 22 (the Hoboken to Binghamton locals). in early 1970, the "lake cities", the very last of e-l's through trains, made her final run between hoboken and chicago. after that, the only head-end cars seen on the e-l were those relegated to mow service. "phoebe" was indeed a lady....a very stylish lady.....and her passing is still mourned by many railfans today.......
