When the Aldene Plan took effect in 1967 (which rerouted all CNJ trains from the Jersey City Ferry Terminal to Penn Station, Newark), the CNJ removed all combos from revene service. Over their many years of service, they carried not only passengers, but express, baggage, and newspapers. Often, as seen here, CNJ's combos ran with the baggage compartment facing towards the rear of the train. Note, too, the vestibule at the baggage end, commonplace on the CNJ until April of 1967. |

This timeless, late-era CNJ steam photo wonderfully showcases one of the railroad's vintage combos; these cars were unique in that they also featured vestibule doors at the baggage end of the cars. On many CNJ trains, right up until the end in 1967, most combos were run with the baggage compartment facing the rear of the consist, as seen here. Over their many years of service, these stalwart veterans carried not only passengers, but baggage, express, and newspapers. When the Aldene plan of 1967 shut down all service to the Jersey City ferry terminal, the CNJ retired all combos from revenue service. Though most were sadly scrapped, several examples thankfully survive today. I cannot believe that it is now nearly 50 years since my mother and I last boarded one of these relics at the echoing Jersey City terminal at Communipaw. Yet another classic aspect of old-time railroading was about to disappear down the echoing corridors of time forever. |
