The last of PSNJ's once-vast fleet of ancient double-ended streetcars lasted in service until early 1954 on the Newark City Subway (today's Newark light rail)
These elderly veterans were replaced by 30 ex-TCRT PCC's, which, themselves, lasted into the 21st century; these historic veterans, in turn, were replaced by modern articulated LRV's.
As you might guess, the modern cars have none of the charm or the personality of the vintage PCC's they replaced.
The forlorn #3214 seen here is a deck roof car; PS also operated a large number of "compromise" roof cars, which, basically, was an updated version of the deck roof.
These cars also operated on the old Newark subway-surface routes, the last of which was converted over to buses in March of 1952.
On the right, notice the junked ford transit bus; PS used a number of these small buses on the more lightly-traveled lines, but they were never much of a success.
Eventually PS either junked them, or sold them to small outfits.
Several of these older trolleys were kept in reserve in case of emergency for some time, stored in the old Cedar St. subway connector tunnel.
These cars were the very last of the "old timers" removed from the city subway.
How casually transportation history was discarded, once upon a time... |
